One of CyberWatch West's main goals is to support recruitment and retention efforts in cybersecurity degree programs. Besides assisting with programs designed to interest middle school and high school students in general in cybersecurity careers, CyberWatch West seeks to help address the underrepresentation of women in the cybersecurity industry. A 2017 Global Information Security Workforce Study found that, as the workforce gap in cybersecurity continues to rise, the number of female professionals in the field has remained stagnant at 11%.
CyberWatch West provides free sample materials to help its educational members and other colleges host the following events:
- Girls Go Tech — One-day workshops that introduce middle school girls to a variety of careers in technology fields
- Cybercamp — Multiday camps introducing high school students to the fundamentals of cybersecurity and to related educational career pathways
- Cybersecurity girls workshop — A one-day event for 7th through 12th graders to visit their local college campus and learn about cybersecurity and technology
